      ART SMITH #BLACKHISTORYMONTH

HE WAS BORN IN CUBA TO JAMAICAN PARENTS IN 1917, AND SOON AFTER IN 1920 THEY SETTLED IN BROOKLYN NY, WHERE HE LATER HONED HIS ARTISTIC TALENTS. AFTER EARNING HIS DEGREE IN 1940 FROM COOPER UNION, HE BEGAN TAKING JEWELRY CLASSES AT NYU. HE ALSO BEGAN TAKNG CLASSES AT NIGHT AND WORKED FOR WINIFRED MASON, AN UP AND COMING COPPERSMITH FROM HAITI. IT WAS THERE HE LEARNED HOW TO TRANSFORM METAL AND COPPER INTO SUCH ARTISTIC PIECES. SOME OF HIS BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENTS INCLUDE DESIGNING A BROOCH FOR ELEANOR ROOSEVELT AND DESIGNING CUFFLINKS FOR DUKE ELLINGTON, THAT INCLUDE NOTES FROM ELLINGTON'S 1930 SONG "MOOD INDIGO". HE HAS BECOME ONE OF MY BIGGEST INSPIRATIONS OVER THE YEARS AND CONTINUES TO INSPIRES THE MASSES. ART SMITH (1917-1982) THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION.
